ART by CAM & New Visiting Artists @ MORGAN CREEK VINEYARDS ARTIST CONVIVIA
“Familiar things in Unfamiliar ways”
Cam Johnson is Morgan Creek Vineyard’s visiting artist for the 2022 season. Cam’s education began in 1995 where over two decades ago he began the study of art at Ridgewater College, Willmar, MN. He completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts, and a Master in Art at the University of Minnesota - Mankato. One of Cam’s most influential academic instructors was Bob Mattson, from Ridgewater College. Mattson’s inspiring and extensive exhibition record includes exhibits at both the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the Walker Art Center. Cam also pays homage to Rea Mingeva, Robert Finkler, and Brian Frink, all professors from the University of Minnesota Mankato art program who guided his art endeavors.
Since leaving academia, Cam’s impressive juried exhibitions, group shows, art awards, and lengthy list of collectors have established him as a notable regional artist with unique imaginative vitality, and a startling body of work in oil, acrylic, watercolor, and gouache mediums.
However art, in the form of picture making, is not the only artistic muse that keeps leading Cam’s imagination toward a career of perfect patterns - rudimentaries - the art of drumming, keeps this beat flowing. From 4 years old he lunged forward with - a paintbrush in one hand, and in the other a “drum-stick.” Cam’s love of percussion instruments led to a treasured period of serious music, composition, recording, and instrumental collaboration with local bands. Eventually, designing album covers with his artistic flair, Cam ultimately achieved unifying his two passions.
The two driving impulses in Cam’s artistic career appear to be ‘quiet imagination.’ and ‘resolute rhythm.’ Striving for the newest expression of a familiar image, he executes an unfamiliar technique with patient care and precise detail while creating his many shapes and mosaic multi-colored pictures.
We are delighted to partner with Cam on our seasonal biodynamic project at Morgan Creek Vineyards presenting an Artist Convivia on a monthly basis from June – September, examining the formative forces of plants through picture making, as outlined by Johann von Goethe in his poem
“The Metamorphosis of Plants.”
